ROOHANI

रूहानी

Hand block-printed ethnic wear, made for the woman who loves the craft but wants it to feel like now.

Opening collection, five designs, made to order

A print pressed by hand carries something a machine can’t copy.

A printer's hands striking a carved block onto ivory cotton in a Sanganer workshop

ROOHANI takes the printing tradition of Sanganer — wooden blocks, one colour at a time, a slight tremor in every repeat — and puts it on silhouettes you would actually wear to a Sunday lunch or a Tuesday meeting.

Nothing here is mass-produced. Each garment is cut, printed and finished to order, which is why we open with five designs and ask you to pre-book rather than fill a warehouse.

From the front

Every angle, considered.

A plain cotton bodice above a skirt of pressed pleats, each pleat carrying the block print unbroken from waist to hem. Keep scrolling: the mannequin turns as you do.

The turn

Pleats pressed by hand.

Machine pleating flattens a print. Ours are set with a hot iron and a wooden rule so the daisies sit whole on every fold and the skirt swings open when you walk.

From the back

The detail you see on the way out.

A single self-fabric tie at the waist, finished by hand and long enough to fall with the skirt. No zip on show, no elastic, nothing that isn’t cloth.

Pre-book a piece

Four hands, four days, one garment.

This is the part most brands skip. We think it’s the part that makes the piece worth keeping. Scroll to see how a ROOHANI print is made.

ठप्पाThe block is carved

A single motif is drawn, transferred to a sheesham wood block and carved by hand with chisels no wider than a pencil. One block prints one colour. A three-colour design needs three blocks that must land on each other within a millimetre.

A carver spends up to a week on one complex block.

रंगThe colour is mixed

Our opening palette is built from natural and low-impact dyes: indigo, madder, pomegranate rind and iron for the deep greens and rust-golds you see across the five. The block is pressed into a padded tray of colour before every single print.

No two lengths of fabric come out identical, and we don’t want them to.

छापThe print is pressed

The fabric is stretched on a long padded table. The printer lines the block up by eye, presses it down with the heel of the hand, and strikes it once. Then moves along. A kurta length takes a few hundred strikes.

That faint irregularity in the repeat is the printer’s hand. It’s the signature.

धूपWashed, and dried in the sun

Printed lengths are washed to fix the colour, then dried outdoors. Only then are they cut and stitched into your size, finished with a stitched-in ROOHANI label and a hand-numbered tag.

Booking to doorstep: three to four weeks.

  • A numbered craft cardWhich block, which dye, which edition number. Signed by the printer.
  • Care notes that respect the dyeCold wash, inside out, dry in shade. The colour softens beautifully over years.

Questions people ask before booking.

Why pre-book instead of buy?
Because each piece is printed and stitched for the person who ordered it. Pre-booking lets us print exactly what’s wanted, keeps prices honest, and means nothing ends up in a sale bin.
How much is the booking amount?
A fixed amount per piece, shown against each design. It comes off the final price. It’s refundable until your fabric goes onto the printing table, usually a few days after booking.
Will my piece look exactly like the photo?
Very close, never identical. Hand block printing has small variations in colour and alignment. That’s the point of it. If something arrives that you feel isn’t right, we’ll fix it or take it back.
Do you ship outside India?
Yes. The UAE is served directly. Other countries on request; we’ll quote the shipping before you pay anything.
What about sizing and alterations?
Standard sizes XS to 3XL. If you’d like a custom length or sleeve, add it to the notes and we’ll confirm on WhatsApp before printing.
How do I care for the print?
Cold hand wash or gentle machine cycle, inside out, mild detergent, dry in shade. The colour settles into a softer, richer version of itself over time.
